This information was contained in the Student register sheets for the period (Archive Ref - QUB/B/2/4/B/2).
R. Belfast Academical Institution" is the the Royal Belfast Academical Institution - a school in the centre of Belfast.

Further references are contained in the university "Calendar". -
    the 1854 Calendar names 'Coates, John" as a non matriculated student (Archive Ref - QUB/B/1/4/5, p. xxvii) 
    the 1856 calendar names 'Coates, John" as one of the M.D. graduates of 1855 (Archive Ref - QUB/B/1/4/16, p. xxii)

So John Coates was a student in the university from at least the academic year 1851/2 and graduated in medicine in 1855.

Further Notes from Student Records at Queen's College Belfast

He was one of the first students at Queen's College Belfast and started in 1850 aged 18.
He graduated in 1855 with a MD having qualified in his studies for MB, BCh and BAO.
He attended school at Belfast Royal Academical Institution.
His father was Henry Coates from Portaferry.
He was Presbyterian and whilst residing in Belfast he spent the first two years at his cousins" address - 24 Fountain Street.

Can't make out the addresses for the other years as his handwriting is not always legible.

When finished at Queen's College Belfast he went on to the Indian Medical Service, by competition, was also Principal and Professor of Medicine, Medical College, Calcutta. Finally he was the Sanitary Commissioner for Bengal.
