Mr William Harrison, the ''Father of Mangapai," now a
very old man, still retains a wonderful vitality and a keen interest in the
affairs of his district. When riding along the Mangapai Waipu road on Friday an
"Advocate" representative came upon the old gentleman sitting by the roadside
about a mile from his home, evidently contemplating the delapidated condition of
an old bridge. "What on earth brings you away out here in this unpleasant
weather, Mr Harrison?" asked our reporter. "I'm just waiting," replied the
veteran, "for the Prime Minister and Mr Mander to come along to see what can be
done about this bridge.'' Mr Harrison is now in his 90th year, and still looks
hale and hearty. He believes in living as quietly as he can, but, to use his own
words he "does just enough work about the place to keep mind and body well, and
always keeps regular hours. He has been an abstainer all his life, except on
certain occasions when his medical adviser insisted on small doses of spirits
"which" (Mr Harrison declared) "I do believe was flavoured with tobacco or some
other vile stuff.
Northern Advocate , 27 April 1914
The death occurred on Saturday at Mangapai of Mr. William
Harrison, one of the pioneer settlers of the district. Mr. Harrison, who had
reached tbe advanced age of 92 years, was usually known as "the father of
Mangapai," where he arrived in 1859, being among the first -white people to
settle in the district. His wife predeceased him by only one month at the age of
91 years. The late Mr. Harrison walked to her funeral in spite of his advanced
age on a raw, wet day. It is surmised that on that occasion he contracted a
chill, which developed into bronchitis, and caused his death.
